Celebrating Buddha’s Birthday in Daegu, Korea

Last Friday was Buddha’s birthday, which meant.. NO SCHOOL! A lot of people had plans to go on trips for the weekend, but I was planning to just stay in Daegu all weekend. I had been wanting to hike the mountains some time, but just never did it. So on Friday I finally went hiking with my co-worker, Tom. I didn’t think it would be very hard, but I thought I was going to die by the end of it. It was a lot steeper than I thought it’d be. We had to stop several times. I may have had something to do with that. We didn’t go to the top, but we reached a point that had a great view of the city.

Tom knew a different way to come back down that would take us through a farm. It wasn’t really my idea of a farm, but it was still really cool.

I have no idea what this is supposed to be

We started heading back home, and Tom pointed out a Buddhist temple, so we decided to go check it out. We ended up going to two different ones. Both of them were in areas that were within a brick wall, and then there’s a few different buildings inside of the walls. We went into one of the brick wall thingys, and then we were asked if we wanted to actually go in the Buddhist temple (Tom speaks Korean pretty well, so we were able to figure out what was going on). I was surprised they let me go in.. I was wearing shorts and had a bloody leg from scraping it while climbing a rock I wasn’t supposed to be climbing. We did have to take our shoes off before going in (but that’s a Korean thing; you don’t wear shoes inside). It was a really interesting experience. They showed us how to bow to Buddha and were just really excited that foreigners came to visit. They gave us free oranges. I wanted to take pictures inside the temple, but I was afraid I’d get in trouble, so I didn’t. We went to the other temple and it was a larger brick wall area, and there was just a lot more going on. We didn’t go inside the temple, but we looked in it and it was much larger than the other one.
